About Me
Patricia L. Montoya, Psy.D.

I received my first degree in nursing and worked in various settings, eventually specializing in intensive care areas. While I loved nursing, my dream was to get a doctorate in psychology. I finally realized that dream and obtained my doctorate at Pacific University in 2001. During this time, I provided therapy and assessment services through the university and off campus. I also completed a 1-year internship at Pacific University and trained half-time at the Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC).

My graduate research focused on diversity issues. From my graduate training to this day, I celebrate diversity. While endeavoring to address the needs of my diverse clients, I practice cultural humility. Cultural humility has been defined as “a humble and respectful attitude toward individuals of other cultures that pushes one to challenge their own cultural biases” and recognizes that learning about other cultures is a lifelong process. In doing so, it is also important for me to acknowledge that I am privileged. I am a white, straight, cisgender, able-bodied woman with access to a higher education. As such, due to these aspects of my identity, I’ve been given unnecessary advantages.

In August of 2001, I was awarded my doctorate by Pacific University. My residency hours were completed at Reed College and the ODOC where I provided therapy and assessment services to college students and comprehensive assessments to inmates. After residency, I became a licensed psychologist in Oregon (#1564) in 2003.

As a practicing psychologist, I’ve worked with clients and students in various settings such as, corrections, a state psychiatric hospital, private practice, an internal medicine practice, a university site, and a Veteran’s Administration (VA) assessment center. In these settings, I’ve worn many hats: evaluator, unit psychologist, behavioral health provider, teacher, supervisor, and therapist. From each of these experiences, I bring the knowledge I’ve gained and the wisdom I’ve learned to every session with my clients. I also bring myself and my respect for my clients.

Although I truly love my work, I believe that recreation and relationships are very important. Pre-COVID, I particularly enjoyed traveling both abroad and in the US. I’m primarily a Pacific Northwesterner and never tire of exploring its beauty. I also enjoy the arts. I write poetry and oil paint. With the pandemic, I am especially thankful for messaging services that allow me to talk with and see family and friends. I always try to prioritize self-care, relationships, exploration, and creativity.
